you think a pointless import duty against your largest short t-bill creditor is no big deal (how about doubling the tax rate of fannie mae? would that be a big deal?), whereas a filing of small displeasure by the counterparty is an over reaction.

Personally I favor completely free trade, always have, always will.

Neither China nor the US actually engages in free trade, which is a pity.

But pointing the finger at each other over this, well, it's hypocritical.

Not to mention humorous.

We're China's biggest trading partner, if China decided to crash the US dollar, it would backfire, and the Chinese know it, and they are not stupid.

It's just posturing.
