Hypothetically what would have happened in the region if Hussein had stayed out?

Hussein would have retained the WB. While the Israelis wanted the Old City back, peaceful relations with at least one neighbor were far more important.

The Israelis took over Gaza in 1967. They could hardly avoid it, they had the whole Sinai. But Gaza is an armpit by design, nobody wants it. That's why Sadat refused to take it back in 1979. It was offered. Hussein certainly would not have taken it.
