Rich, I feel that you’re looking for individual tree species, but missing the fact that I’m considering the forest as a whole.
My point is that many of the early immigrants to Canada, Australia, and the USA came from England (Great Britain) around the same general extended time period. Therefore all three countries, by your supposition, should be more or less equally evil.
If I recall my Canadian history correctly, one of the reasons for building the CPR cross-Canada railway was to populate the Prairie Provinces. This was long before WWI. Yes there were free land grants, and probably a grubstake involved, but not all the free land parcels were productive for farming purposes. Many struggled, and quite a few picked up and moved on to better lands. Don’t forget that many of these homesteaders were facing winters (and [shorter] summer growing seasons) that were nothing like what they had ever experienced before. Simple survival could be extremely difficult. In Alberta, besides the English, there are various pockets of peoples of French, German, Ukrainian, etc. ancestry. I recall hearing, some 30+ years ago, that there were still some free land grants available somewhere in the Peace River area (northwestern Alberta).
I agree with your view on welfare and UI. I also know stories and people who abuse these systems and will continue to do so until stopped by the governments and their agencies. It must be a Hand-up. Not a Hand-out. And yes, this does not apply to those who Cannot Help themselves. Many can do something though. I know at least two people who fall into this category, and with assistance, work at productive jobs that require brainpower.
The lazy trash smokers and drinkers pay obscene taxes on their vices. They will argue as to where those monies are going… Not to healthcare?
PS. I believe you must be Inderjit? (Singh or Kaur?) Forest not the trees... My screen name is much simpler than that. LOL
