Analog AMPS

Dan,

<< Why don't you name ONE government mandated product standard in the U.S.? >>

AT&T's AMPS. Back when the U.S. was the worlds largest market for mobile wireless telephony.

AMPS was the only standardized mobile wireless technology allowed in FCC controlled and regulated cellular spectrum at 850 MHz until IS-54 TDMA and IS-95 CDMA were standardized in the early nineties and subsequently commercialized and the PCS band was opened up and the first phase of auctions were completed in 1995.

There was one heck of a time-gap between the time the AT&T monopoly was broken up in 1984 and the first non-AMPS cellular handsets (actually AMPS/TDMA) were introduced in this country and much longer before AMPS was displaced as the dominant mobile wireless technology in the U.S.
