An addendum to my previous post.

I was looking over your numbers again, and there's yet another problem. Quite a big one, too. You're confusing the amount of money spent per Medicare recipient with the amount that each person in the US has to pay in taxes to cover it.

If the government spent 8 grand for each of roughly 42 million people in 2005, then that means that each taxpayer would have spent some fraction of that amount, since we would divide the total tax liability by the number of taxpayers.

And don't forget that in addition to individual taxpayers, there are also businesses that pay taxes.

Please note that I'm not arguing with your arithmetic. Just your math. You set up the problem incorrectly, which is why you got incorrect results.
