April 9 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. buyers imported record volumes of liquefied natural gas on April 6 as gas prices higher than those in Asia and Europe attracted cargoes, LNG intelligence said, citing data provider Bentek Energy.
LNG imports into the U.S. peaked on April 6 at 3.4 million British thermal units, the report said. Lake Charles LNG terminal in Louisiana, the country's biggest LNG terminal, imported 1.9 million British thermal units, 17 times more than the daily average into that terminal last year.
U.S. terminals in March were offering sellers as much as $3.50 more than European netbacks, the price derived after deducting transportation and insurance.
Exports of LNG from Egypt almost doubled to 318 million cubic feet of gas a day (600,000 tons) in the first quarter of 2007, or 15 percent of total U.S. LNG supply, compared with a year earlier, the report said. LNG shipments from Trinidad, U.S.'s largest LNG supplier, fell to 65 percent of total U.S. LNG imports compared with 77 percent in a year-earlier period.
