In Boone there is a nurse practitioner who is just as good or more so than the internist whom she is working for.

I think that the training of nurses today is superior to when our parents were reared. A good friend of mine is a nurse practitioner here. She is allowed to write prescriptions..diagnosis illnesses and if there is something that she feels that she can not handle she has a physician to whom she can go.

There are many Doctors who disagree about health issues.
My sister's ex husband who has the $ to have the best health care got diagnoses from three different Doctors here in Sarasota... He had pancreatic problems. One said that if he did not have is pancreas taken out he would have 6 months to live. Another said a portion of the pancreas (which he did)
and the third had a different opinion .... about another lobe of pancreas.

Ed got himself into Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn. and the diagnosis there was entirely different..

He is alive not over six months, feeling better and was ever so glad he went to Mayo.

Although most of us could never afford what he paid.. even to get himself into Mayo as there is a waiting list... to learn what to do about our illnesses.. However, not diagnosing but sharing here some of our experiences with the medical profession we might glean some insights as which path might be best for us.

I have had friends who have had differing solutions for dealing with breast cancer.. From total mastectomies to one breast off to just radiation and chemo.. Different Doctors advise different treatments and I know that there are varying forms of cancer that require more abrasive remedies...

However, a friend whom I lost two years ago had cervical cancer.. At Moffat which is a cancer hospital she had a surgeon who wanted to take the tumor our. The radiologist wanted to start immediately with radiation and chemo to shrink the tumor.. The Internist did not offer a choice and she went with the surgery which weakened her so that she died within 3 months of diagnosis..

Would she be alive had she gone with what the radiologist advised. Who knows. But maybe she could have had input from other woman who have had same cancer. We cannot diagnosis or solve problems here but we sure can try to share with one another our experience....
