Copper consumption expected to rise in India on industrial demand

Source: Hoovers

India's copper consumption should grow by 6%-7% on year to 468,000 metric tons in 2007, as rapid economic growth fuels copper demand from the power, construction and services sectors, a senior industry official said Monday.

As a result the utilization of India's installed copper smelting and mining capacities might rise.

India has an installed copper smelting and refining capacity of more than 1 million tons, but in 2006 around 750,000 tons of copper was smelted and refined.

India's mined copper production was around 25,000 tons in 2006.
