That's pretty much the bottom line, isn't it? I suspect that the reason it happened is that the British just weren't expecting it. Which raises my suspicions that the Revolutionary Guard was off the reservation and freelancing a bit. In my mind, this is bolstered by the fact that the incident was over so quickly. Yeah, Shorty et al takes that as a sign they British caved into Iranian demands, but it is much more likely the Iranian officials wanted it over with as much as the British. If the Brits were caving, the Iranians would have strung them out and got even more goodies.
