You might also get increased attendance and more participation as people see the new burden on the church, particularly if they had to pay property taxes, but left them the ability to give tax receipts. Either way, it should not be that the general population pays for the religious convictions of others, and under the present system that s what happens. As for soup kitchens in my area, each church does one breakfast once a month, big deal. But perhaps that kind of thing, like charitable contributions could be tax deductible.
