Iran was definitely going moderate in early 2001. They elected a whole slate of new leaders who opposed the revolutionary Mullahs and were much more pro-western than we'd seen since the days of the Shah. You cannot base your feelings about Iran on the 1970's. The world has changed a great deal since then.
