FYI for everyone.....
ERICSSON CHOSEN TO PARTICIPATE IN BT DWDM PILOT DEPLOYMENT
Shared space and tele-presence are just two of the interactive video-services which will be provided through the UK's advanced digital network thanks to Ericsson Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology.
BT is to deploy ERION- (Ericsson Optical Network) systems during the Spring of 1998, positioning the company as a major force in optical network development. Ericsson, a long-term partner and supplier of PDH and SDH transmission technologies to BT, has again been chosen following a period of thorough evaluation in competition with a number of other companies.
Mr Jose Daza, Ericsson's Business Development Director, said that the company's portfolio in transmission infrastructure offered a flexible and secure set of solutions.
"Ericsson is delighted to have been chosen to participate in the pilot deployment. Optical Networking research activities has been ongoing within Ericsson for many years. The results have been fed into applied research focusing on network architectures and products. These have been combined to create the vision of a high capacity optical transport network," he said.
ERION- Networker which has been selected by BT in its 16-wavelength configuration, is an expandable system. For the BT pilot this will take the form of a point-to-point application. ERION- Compact, a very cost effective system, completes the present ERION-portfolio.
"Ericsson DWDM technology offers the significant advantages of being open and reliable. Mapping solutions exactly to customer requirements is one of the key features offered by ERION. Ericsson's DWDM network solutions provide the ability to maximise output from existing SDH and PDH transmission systems, while being an excellent platform for ATM and fast IP interconnect," said Mr Daza.
Mr Daza, who is based at the global headquarters for Ericsson's Business Unit Transport and Cable Networks near Horsham in Southern England, said one important feature of the ERION-family, optical protection switching, automatically restores service in the event of failures such as cable breaks. "When you're carrying half a million calls which might be lost with a single fault, optical protection switching is crucial," said Mr Daza.
He said that DWDM is the practical and cost effective way of meeting capacity requirements.
"Meeting the size and complexity of existing traffic demand by installing new optical fibres is expensive, ERION-offers a way out of this costly spiral of technology."
Ericsson offers a full transport networks portfolio for established and new network operators. The portfolio includes SDH, PDH, as well as DWDM. More than 100 customers in more than 47 countries worldwide have already chosen transport network solutions from Ericsson.
Ericsson's 90,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in telecommunications.
