Hello Bobby Yellin: Probaly in this part of the world the Austin Chalk is the most famous oil bearing structure with vertical fracture porosity. I being one of the SUCKERS participated in a number of Austin Chalk wells in the late 70's and early 80's, this was before horizontal drilling was perfected. At that time we drilled vertical wells into this formation and occasionally one did hit , but only occasionally. The chalk is a large carbonate formation that plunges into the Gulf of Mexico. Where this fomation bends (like a table cloth, dried concrete etc.) verical fracture occur. (this is a very simplified discription) In this case the fractures are full of OIL. This is known as vertical fracture porosity. After looking at the logs of the two wells drilled by Getty on the A-3 concession recently acquired by Rankin Resources, the logs are very similar to Austiin Chalk well logs that I have looked at. The good thing about the oil business versus the mining is that you know very quickly if you are succesful. Cheers W.W.
