That sure sounds familiar. During the war we lived in the country, in between two uncles. Each of us had just over an acre of land. Uncles had the Victory Gardens on both sides of us. We raised the livestock. Chickens, rabbits, some geese, a beef and a hog each year. We also had wild rhubarb and asparagus. There were a couple of apple trees, but not much more in the way of fruit. I did have another aunt and uncle with a huge cherry tree in their yard. They lived in the city and would always give us a large amount of cherries every year. We ate well, lived well and drank ice cold water from an artesian well at the back of the house. None of that exists out there today, except the old house. Even the well has gone dry.
