Hi pucksters. Attended my first of 3-5 hockey pools tonight. This one was huge with 26 companies/entrants selecting 10 rounds. That's right 260 players selected overall. Well actually you could select a team's goalies (12 pts/shutout) and a team's wins (1 pt/win) as seperate picks also. Free entry to the lucky companies that got in. It's sponsored by the Edmonton Oilers hockey team, Champions (the official Oilers souveneir and clothing store).

Best part was for 260 selections in total we were done in just over 2 hours. Geez I've been in drafts with 140 players selected that takes over 3 1/2 hours.

Here are our 10 selections. We picked 23rd out of 26 teams:
1. Yashin OTT - 23 overall
2. Recchi MTL - 30 overall
3. Iginla CAL - 75 overall
4. Kovalenko EDM - 82 overall
5. Ronning PHX - 127 overall
6. Nylander CAL - 134 overall
7. McAmmond EDM - 179 overall
8. NJD wins - 186 overall
9. Dvorak FLA - 231 overall
10. Gary Suter CHI - 238 overall

Each entrant had a selection committee of 4 persons. The only pick I didn't think was good was McAmmond (too early but in Edmt Oilers tend to go earlier than other parts of the league).

I'd never been in a draft with over 200 players selected before.

For anyone interested here are the top 10 picks overall in order:
1. Jagr
2. Selanne
3. Kariya
4. Sakic
5. Forsberg
6. Lindros
7. Leclair
8. Gretzky
9. Weight
10.Shanahan

Only surprises in top 10 IMO were omission of Tkachuk (went 16th). I also would have ranked Koivu ahead of Shanahan.

Other notable selections (which I thought were way too early for the risk involved) included Lafontaine NYR - 15 overall, Gary Roberts CAR - 61 overall, Zubrus PHI - 60 overall, Kurri COL - 71 overall ouch, Prospal PHI - 70 overall, Martin Lapointe DET - 85 overall, Robitaill LA - 77 overall)

More pools lined up Sat, Sun and possibly next Mon. This doesn't include the entry form kind with internet, newspapers, etc. Addicted to hockey. You bet.

PS - Mich I'm sorry I didn't get you a list to help with your pool. I was waiting for an email from you and I guess we didn't touch base in time. I'm sure you'll do fine.
