Interesting technique for extracting oil from shale invented by Shell. biz.yahoo.com There is definitely a fly in the ointnment which is not mentioned by the article, namely, the pollution of the water tables caused after extraction of the oil. There would presumably be no further need for the cooling rods. When the water melts, the nasty stuff gets to migrate. Shell's patent application is the longest in US history.
