In another ten years when the SUVs are cleared off the road - and it is safe for "squash boxes" - I will get one of those 1,500lb Mercedes "Smart Cars" getting 54 mpg. I am always so conflicted between my oily investments going through the roof, the direct financial pain I will incur with serious conservation, and my country going to hell in a handbasket. I walked home from school in the early '70s - no problem. I have never been healthier since I started turning the thermostat down to 52F at night in the winter. My sinuses would dry and crack, and I would get horrible colds. No more. Drop the thermo and crank up that electric blanket. Going to the bathroom gets a little interesting. I gave a lecture some time ago on the state of energy to the local evening adult college. I found a great graphic which displayed the total AVAILABLE solar flux integrated or a year, and mapped against the territory of the US such that those states with the most advantageous solar input would be used to power the total current load of the US. (I know that was a mouthful.) Basically all of the incident solar from Florida to California and halfway to St Louis would have to be used to suck up power. If you start considering efficiency and the notion that you can't put up a solar panel on every square inch, it gets real dicey. I am not Mr. Green, but I recognize the need to conserve. Besides I am doing my part. Would that be financial conservation by driving a fuel efficient vehicle when diesel hits $4 this summer, or "Green" conservation just to be a nice guy??? I will let you decide. BTW: Discussing one's financial status has always been distasteful and always should be, but my CNQ advances these last few weeks will pay my automotive liquid hydrocarbon tab for '07 - thank you very much. If I hadn't sold those April $55s, it would have paid for next year's as well. That bugger just crossed $60. Grrrrrrrr. I am waiting for my pullback. Anytime between now and next Friday would do just fine.
