unclewest, is there anything that we as a society, can do about the IED's? Maybe some sort of hanging large magnet that could be flown over the areas, pulled from the sand and dropped off the road.... Wish I was an imaginative cartoonist and an engineer....It seems impossible that we can't think of something to get rid of these things.

Weapons of war disappear when either their effects are neutralized or better weapons are developed.

An IED is a mine of sorts. We developed a solution to them in WWI. Have walking patrols accompany convoys. That technique was also employed in WWII, Korea and Vietnam and it worked. It is a lesson lost most likely due to the perceived need for speed.

We have neutralized some of the detonation systems, but every time we do their side brings out another.
We should all recognize that our adversaries are continuously working on bigger and better weapons. IED's will not be their weapon of choice for killing Americans much longer.

Until IEDs are neutralized or superseded, it is idiotic to continue to have our troops patrol Arab cities in hummers. The old outrage for lack of hummer armor should now be seen for what it was...dumb blindness. We needed a real solution than and now. Tell that to your Congressmen.

Also tell them, SF is the designated DOD agency for unconventional warfare. Give SF the UW mission and use our regular combat troops for conventional missions like stopping the infiltration of Muslim militant warriors and war supplies. Presently we are doing things bassackwards.
