The other explanation just didn't fit.

There is more than two explanations. I agree that it doesn't make sense that nobody noticed the hijackings for hours, but it also doesn't make sense that someone snuck truckloads of explosives into the buildings under the noses of a hundred thousand nosy New Yorkers.

The real truth is somewhere in between.

When you look in between those stories I think you will find Dick Cheney.

The structure doesn't all just fall down at once though, there is not enough energy at any time for instantaneous failure of all load bearing points.

Right, as each floor fails it is like a "karate chop" to the floor under it. That effect could never be duplicated by explosives unless there was a detonation on every floor in a precise sequence that is just the opposite of the way they really demolish buildings. (WTC-7 being an exception that tests the rule).
