Ed, you forgot about other tehnologies, that do not require infrastructure upgrades, like LMDS. LMDS has never been auctioned, has never used digital technologies,or gallium arsenide chips, but they are going to when they come to market. New Media Comm,Stanford telecom, and Bosche telecom(who bought TXN LMDS technology), are coming out with LMDS wireless digital technology that runs at 48 mbps and is fully capable of not only data, but telephony and is a fully capable 2-way system. LMDS runs at about the same bandwidth as HFC,and is possibly the greatest challenge to incumbent telco's and cable companies. I am looking into starting a company that uses this technology next year, the cost is fairly cheap, and the possibilies are enormous. There are lots of possibilities for data and voice, and there will be many competing technologies to ADSL coming out. But some things are certain, those that come up with a system that does not need to login and is always on,that has the speed for full motion video, has telephony capabilities, and allows mobile wireless communication will probably win.
