New Muslim umbrella organization wants equal status in Germany

Berlin (dpa) - A newly-formed Muslim umbrella organization wants Islam to have equal status with other religions in Germany, with the aim of ensuring that Islamic studies are taught at school across the country, the news magazine Der Spiegel reported Saturday.

Aiman Mazyek, general secretary of the Islamic Council of Germany, said the aim was to draw up a "binding roadmap" at a meeting with Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble in early May.

Recognition of Islam's rights would result in German states "finally offering Islamic studies in schools on a large scale," Mazyek told Der Spiegel.

The new national coordination council for Muslims, formed during the week after lengthy talks, also aimed for legal status that would give it the same rights as churches under tax law, he said.

A spokeswoman for Schaeuble's ministry said social issues would receive priority at the talks in May, such as the fact that Muslim girls did not take part in swimming lessons or biology classes.

Four of Germany's main Muslim groups announced Wednesday they had formed a national coordination council so they could speak with one voice to the German government.

The government praised the move, which followed last year's launch of government talks with 15 figures from the broader Islamic community.

But there was criticism from secular Muslims, who said they feared the council would project strongly religious views as representative of the whole community.
