Okay, I stand corrected, there certainly have been some large divergences over the longer term. The one from 1995 to 2000 is particularly striking, when stocks were going up and gold was going down. It's possible we could see the opposite now, but I doubt it. For the past 5 years gold and stocks have been tracking together and my guess is that will continue for a while.

By the way, the dow/gold ratio before 1972 doesn't mean much, because the gold price was held constant, with only one adjustment in the 1930s.
