As the ends become more polarized, those in the middle need to coalesce around someone or something to keep the lunatics from simply passing the baton every decade. But each time a potential moderate steps up, they're either knocked down by or sucked into the wings...

I want someone who will stand squarely and proudly in the middle: less spending, better education, tough defense, civil rights and liberties, social programs, and death penalty. But, that would put a lot of party bosses on both sides out of business.
