JF, among other things, Jesus was arguing against the legalistic view of the Pharisees at the time. They perfected the art of drawing boundaries, then walking right up to the line without crossing it. For example, the Old Testament law said that 40 lashes is enough to kill a man (equivalent to a death sentence), so the Pharisees created the tradition of punishing people with 39 lashes.

You can consider the Pharisees to be the ancient equivalent of today's "religious right." But Jesus never intended to replace one legalistic standard with another one. Instead, the message is clear. All have fallen short.
