I can pretty much guarantee the disillusionment was a whole lot easier to take.

Have you seen ROME? If you want a good idea of exactly how different things were back then, it gives an excellent window. HBO did a wonderful job. While Rome wasn't the ME of the time, it was closer to it than the ME of the time is to us. The culture is very alien to us.
