KInetic energy = mv^2/2. The Pentagon plane was going slower than the F4, but the mass must have been several times that of the F4. The K.E. was comparable, I'd say.

Regarding vaporization, I'm just speculating. What else can turn metal to dust? In the F4 case the region of extreme high temperature would be very small, totally obscured. If it was emitting light you probably wouldn't be able to see it.
