Change in My Lifetime: Why Imus Thinks He's Not Racist
The endless rehashing of this issue in the media has, of course, paid a lot of attention to the race gap: A lot of whites don't get why blacks are so upset by Imus, and a lot of blacks don't get how whites could be so dense. But the under-reported and under-analyzed part of the Imus story isn't the race gap, it's how the race gap combines with the generation gap.

One of the best written articles on the subject. I am not sure its always age that is the deciding factor but its frustrating that some white people don't get how disgusting Imus's words were. Clearly, Imus doesn't........and if it weren't for the fact that he's been warned before, I would almost feel sorry for him.

Some people call the attitude the author is discussing white privilege. I don't like the term for a whole bunch of reasons, but in part, it has some resonance in the Imus incident.

At the same time, I don't think there should be a double standard for rappers who use demeaning language esp. to women in their music notwithstanding Snoop Dogg's very defensive explanation for the very offensive lyrics found in rap music.
