If the Soviets hadn't of thrown so many men into the meat grinder, we would have nuked Germany, too. They had plans in place.

Which is not to say there wasn't any racism involved. But, the war was a close thing, they were driven more by military necessity and not racism. Heck, the war drove them to accept blacks on a more equal footing. And the results probably led Eisenhower to support equal rights and desegregation in spite of the political blowback.

Which is not to say that Ike was some sort of saint. He was the most overtly political general of WWII. I guess he saw how the blacks worked for the war effort, despite the obstacles. And valued their efforts. No good officer could ignore that for long.
