I note the government's influence here in the DoE's $15Million funding of A123's pioneering work (those are my words, but that's what it is, effectively), as a means of bootstrapping "its version of lithium-ion technology for hybrid-electric vehicle applications."

I think that kind of Federal Funding hurts, not helps. It brings to the fore the company that is best at sucking up to the DC bureaucrats, and causes companies that might have the talent to come up with a breakthough less able to raise private money.

The Japanese tried this approach for years, and it has got them nowhere.
