It's a useful reminder that the dogmatic partisans simply repeating slogans over and over can't make them true and lasting; the Democrats did lose touch with the American people in the 80's and had to come back from the wilderness to find a governing formula. But the ridiculous notion that anyone not pro-Bush is way out on the left today is statistical nonsense.

It was also equally true that everyone who believed that Gore and Kerry HAD to win just because the serious left couldn't stand Bush, was listening to their own rhetoric too much.

You can be sure that the political strategists who will actually fight the next election aren't dismissing 60-65% of the electorate with simplistic slogans and insults. Capturing the center is the key to winning in 2008, just like it was in the close races in 2006 and Bush taking Ohio in 2004.
