Bolivia's Comibol to restart copper output at Corocoro: minister
Source: Platts Bolivia's state mining firm Comibol plans to invest $8 million in the first stage of an attempt to restart copper production at the Corocoro deposit, the country's mining and metallurgy minister Luis Alberto Echazu said Monday.
"The engineers have begun their tasks and the final design of the mining center will be ready in three months and we hope that within three to six months, following its construction, copper production will begin," the minister explained.
The plan, part of the government's program to increase state control over the country's natural resources, would create 200 jobs in the first stage, later rising to 1,200 jobs.
Bolivian president Evo Morales said earlier this month that the government would seek $100 million of financing to produce 2,000mt/month of copper at Corocoro, beginning next December.
Located 120 kilometers south of La Paz, Corocoro was Bolivia's largest copper mine when it was shut in 1985. |
