Good point about suicides. The general point the "from my cold dead hands" gun rights absolutists miss is that our laws have to balance individual rights against public interest in many respects and guns are no exception. Public safety is, even to a thinking libertarian, a legitimate function of government and the risks to public safety from allowing the absolutists their way are far greater, IMO, than the risks of whatever slippery slope personal liberty argument they want to make or the remote possibility that some armed amateur student deputy could correctly assess the situation and stop a lunatic from killing people when the real police could not.
