I'm thinking that having more armed guards may be the only way to go. But, on a big campus like that, it may be impractical.

Are you suggesting that we hire armed guards for every college campus in the country? That would be expensive and would certainly change the flavor of the college experience.

I think each institution needs to asses their capabilities and their needs in conjunction with the local campus police and off campus departments. Together they should formulate a response plan for dealing with this kind of situation. Keep in mind that while this event was horrible it is also rare. We shouldn't go to the point where we have armed guards on every corner of every building.

Clearly a more rapid response was needed in Virginia. The shooter was at large on the campus for several hours and apparently did the shootings in two episodes. You need highly trained rapid response. Each campus cannot afford, nor do they need their own team. There should be a team that can respond anywhere in the community within say 20 minutes or less. The campus and local police would be part of the response. They would need training in how to cordon off nuts like this and to keep them contained for the intervening period. The larger the campus the quicker the response that will be needed. Usually large campuses are located near urban areas. Thus the cost of security would be a community issue and not strictly a campus issue.

I'm not sure if the recent gun ban at VT had much to do with the outcome. There are not that many people walking around with concealed weapons anyway. What you want to avoid is trying to solve the problem by arming everyone. Here's your student ID and your 9mm, won't be as effective as some would hope for.

A gun in the hand of an untrained person is an accident waiting to happen. Many people are not even trainable to carry a weapon.

No easy answers to this one.
