He was apologizing for being absent from the thread a lot and says he is dissapointed in his math research and will probably have to settle for ABD now. ABD means he has been working on his PhD. He has probably completed his coursework, passed his qualifying exams but is not going to complete the final requirement ... publish a research disertation.
