I don't agree, at least not if you mean that statement to be universally correct. Its better for countries to trade and buy from more efficient producers. The US exports as well as imports. Drop down the level of trade, and try to produce 96% of all American consumption and you will decrease the real wealth for Americans, and for others, and thats not even considering the likely indirect effect when other countries import less American goods (again harming both themselves and us)
