France was at war while the king taxed the people and not the nobility.

France spent a much larger percentage of their wealth on war. Unlike the present day US. Also unlike the present day US government social spending wasn't larger then government spending on their military. The US today isn't anywhere close to having the level of fiscal difficulties that France had at the time, and if it was it wouldn't have much to do with spending 1% of GDP on a war.


You bandy about these percentages like they mean something. We have spent a half billion dollars on this war. With all the other obligations this country has, it is breaking our fiscal 'back'.
