SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry wireless service suffered what the company called a "service interruption" in North America beginning late Tuesday, causing angst among customers who use the device as a digital link to the office.
Some U.S. users whose e-mail service was interrupted reported by mid-morning Eastern Time Wednesday that it had been restored. Other U.S. users were unaffected, as was European service.

A message on the company's customer support line during the outage said "we are currently experiencing technical difficulties with BlackBerry service that may cause delays in sending and receiving messages."
The message concluded with an apology for the "service interruption."
In response to an e-mail query, a Research in Motion spokeswoman issued a statement that said BlackBerry "e-mail delivery was delayed or intermittent during the service interruption."
The "root cause is currently under review, but service for most customers was restored overnight and RIM is closely monitoring systems in order to maintain normal service levels," the statement read.
MarketWatch San Francisco reporter John Letzing contributed to this report.
