i agree with you....natural disasters are tragedies...the massacre was tragic, labeling the massacre a tragedy (in the singular sense as you point out) is a subtle but relevant mischaracterization because it lumps crimes with natural disasters...as you say...subtle and beyond the recognition of less astute observers
