I am considering buying my wife the 13" Macbook 2ghz duo core with 1 gig ram and 80 gig hard drive to use for travel while in Japan.

I would only advise to get the black one, having read evidence that as the white ones age, the plastic can yellow due to heat and environmental issues. Of course being white, it's more prone to discoloration from dirt and skin oils anyway.

I think the overheating problems have gotten better, one issue last year was due to a manufacturing problem where one of the vents was getting blocked by some plastic.

I never buy the first generation of any computer product, Apple seems to have as many issues as other manufacturers do in that regard. Since assembly has now moved overseas, Apple's QA seems to have suffered a hit for their hardware lately.
