Watch the guy carefully and let him know you think he is suspicious. Also keep one hand in pocket or in a (somewhat natural) position where a concealed weapon can be reached easily. Most criminals want easy marks who aren't paying attention, and they don't want to get shot. They look for those sorts of signs. A sign I look for is if their hands are visible. If not that's a warning sign.

My father in law says the easiest way to get an intruder out of your house is to let him hear the "shuk-shuk" of a shotgun being loaded. Even the dumbest intruders recognize that sound and will leave immediately.
