I have no idea how true it was, but when my son was doing ASW he said the Navy knew where every submarine on the planet was at all times. Seems a bit of a stretch. He said after the Soviet Union folded the big concern was really about Libya or Iraq or some upstart twerp buying an old Russian sub and trying to float it up the Hudson River with a nuke aboard. He said the older subs were particularly easy to track.

I have a church friend who spent a Navy career in subs, ending up a sub commander. He pretty much agrees with your stand on stealth for US submarines. Not hard to believe that.
