You got it. You zero'd in on the exact reason why I posted this article. I really believe that ethanol is a red herring. It might be useful as a small market stop-gap to oil independence, but the ultimate solution in my mind is all electric vehicles and a supply chain of electricity stretching backwards to improved, distributed electrical infrastructure transporting electricity which was created by wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear power sources. Power source to wheel efficiency is highest will all electric and we can cut greenhouse gas emmissions dramatically through the use of non-coal alternatives.

I think all of the above will become obvious over time, but we should let the market decide, like you said. And that means providing disincentives to use gas and oil and providing incentives to use any alternatives. But let's level the playing field for alternatives and make it hard as hell to make a profit selling oil/gas, and expensive as hell to use oil/gas.
