I think it all boils down to energy storage technology. Notice I didn't say battery technology. There are other storage technologies like ultra-capacitors that are being R&D'd by companies like EESTor. Anyway, as soon as we get the breakthroughs there, EVs will be capable of displacing almost every vehicle on the road, maybe even long-haul trucking.

I know it seems ridiculous now, but I can imagine a future where super-fast electric vehicle recharging stations exist in most gas stations and driving 16 hours a day in an EV will become possible due to those stations and due to long-lived, high energy storage device capacities.
