Sorry.

Yep. I once heard one of these motivational gurus (can't remember which one) tell a story about one of his teenagers. She was being a pain in the neck and was apparently angry all the time. He couldn't do anything about her behavior so he convened a family meeting. Everyone took turns telling her how what she did was hurting them. The idea was to either make her empathetic and change her behavior or shame/guilt her into the same.

Nothing improved.

He then heard about some tribe that takes a person who isn't behaving as they'd like and do the same kind of thing. Except in this case they tell everything that person has done that is good. They only focus on all the good the person has done for his entire life.

He tried it with his teenager and she survived to become a nice adult.

When I say that people are all criminals and suspects, I'm saying that this is how we treat everyone. The paranoia, suspicion and fear has gotten so out of control that the kneejerk reaction to everything is to assume that everyone with shampoo is going to blow up an airplane. It's ridiculous and it doesn't work anyway. People become untethered to society and lose all respect for it. This allows them to do all kinds of nasty things whether it's lying about war or shooting strangers.
