China is not paying them, advertisers are. China allows them to reach the eyeballs in China that advertisers are willing ot pay for. Management is paid by stock compensation, and if viewership increases, so does the stock price, a substantial hit to their traffic ranking would have a major deleterious effect on the stock price, and management would lose millions of dollars. Thus Yahoo had the ethical conundrum, and they appear to have came down on the side of torture for money.
