Gates in Baghdad to push Iraq leaders on reconciliation Thu Apr 19, 8:05 AM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Baghdad on Thursday on an unannounced visit, planning to urge Iraq's political leaders to speed up reconciliation efforts.

"Frankly I would like to see faster progress," Gates told reporters before departing Tel Aviv for Baghdad.

His visit came a day after car bombings killed nearly 200 people in the worst violence in the city since U.S. and Iraqi troops launched a security crackdown in February.

"The Iraqis have to know ... that this isn't an open-ended commitment," Gates said, appearing to refer to Washington's continued troop presence in Iraq.

The visit is Gates' third to Iraq since taking over as defense secretary but his first since U.S. President George W. Bush's decision to send an extra 30,000 troops mostly to Baghdad under a security plan seen as the last-ditch attempt to avert the country's slide into civil war.
