The approach to accounting for interest expense incurred by the net share settlement convertible debt that companies have been issuing to finance repurchases is coming under scrutiny by the FASB. Net share settlement converts can allow issuers to avoid dilution by offering partial cash payment upon conversion. The issue is scheduled for consideration on June 14, and one possible resolution could drive the reported interest expense up substantially for net share settlement instruments. If that happens the debt-funded buyback party could be over.”>>
