You make some good points Oeconomicus. I'll freely admit that my emotional reaction to the massacre is affecting my POV right now. As time & events unfold I'm sure I'll continue to modify my POV accordingly as additional facts come to light.

I agree that individuals should be protected from state power. I also believe that there are times when the state should be more able to protect us from individuals like Cho than they seem to be now. I believe that when the balance between the two favors one side to excess you are asking for trouble. It looks like that is the case now, so why not lower the threshold so that the Cho's out there can be more easily protected from themselves & others?

And I couldn't agree more that, "there are lessons to be learned from this case that will help in connecting the dots, from both mental health and gun sale background check perspectives, in the future." I'm just weighing in with my 2¢ on those issues as are you.

Still, I think the dots that should have been connected by the university were much clearer than the dots the 9/11 whiners attempted to claim existed. VT had a chronological string of dots pointing to a single, extremely disturbed individual. Many of them were clear red flags pointing to trouble on the horizon.

The 9/11 whiners grasped at straws to make dots. They strained to make dots out of vague, non-specific info. They also manufactured dots out of thin air & called them dots. And most of the so-called dots did not point to 19 specific terrorists, nor did they point to a specific time frame or a specific target. That meant there was at best vague info about vague individuals targeting non-specific sites in a non-specific time frame that encompassed most of the United States.

The dots for Cho were for one specific individual in a specific place who was a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.
