The press would not have had to do much digging, much of the press would have been fired if they didn't follow the Safire, Kristol, Krauthammer, Judy Miller, and other neo-con mouthpieces. All they had to do was get differing opinions other than the Iraqi nationals with Chalabi as its source of Iraqi intelligence (what a laugh then and now).
I noticed that on TV they featured Saddams "bomb maker" repeatedly and never gave any counter-argument. I never saw the "bomb maker" on TV after we invaded - how come these jokesters are not brought back on and hung up by their toes???
The counter-arguments were out there but they were intentionally muffled. For example, Scott Ritter, a former UN weapons inspector REPEATEDLY stated that the government was lying and trying to get us into a war just like Vietnam, but the talking heads marginalized him. Also, former US Ambassdor to Iraq, Edward Peck continuously stated that there were no weapons.
