Kech, it's not that Japan is safe because they don't have guns so much as Japan is safe because they aren't wanting to go around shooting people.

But I'm sure that if guns were legalized, a LOT more people would have them and the death rate by gunfire would go up a lot. I think the death rate would go up overall too.

I think it's true that police do help prevent some crimes. The two things which prevent crimes are the likelihood of being caught and the punishment that results. Better still is to avoid people considering whether it's worth committing a crime or not, but that's a different problem.

So, having 100 times as many police in a "well-regulated militia" would help prevent crimes as there would be some deputies to help out at the instant the decision to commit a crime is taken.

I'm sure "well-regulated" would be fodder for a Simpson's episode [and it has probably already been done].
